Windows Server features advanced security, unique Azure capabilities, and a flexible application platform

Credential Guard is enabled by default, increasing system protection. In terms of virtualisation, second-generation virtual machines are set by default in the Hyper-V wizard, simplifying the management of modern virtual environments. In addition, built-in tools such as Windows Terminal and Windows Package Manager (WinGet) simplify system and application management. Integration with Azure Arc enables more efficient management of hybrid cloud environments, which is beneficial for organisations combining on-premises infrastructure with the cloud.

Core licenses are sold in bundles of two (2-pack of core licenses) and 16 (16-pack of core licenses). Each processor must be licensed for a minimum of eight core licenses. Each physical server, including a single-processor server, must be licensed for a minimum of 16. core licenses (eight two-packs or one 16-pack). One license per core must be assigned to each physical server core. Additional cores can then be licensed in increments of two or 16 packages.

The Windows Server Standard and Datacenter editions still require a Windows Server CAL license for each user or device accessing the server.

A user-dedicated CAL allows a single user to connect to the server from multiple devices. CAL dedicated to a device allows multiple users to connect from a single device. This variant is particularly used in places with a shift work system.

Windows Server 2022 is built on the strong foundations of its predecessor Windows Server 2019, but there are changes and new features in four key areas: hybrid capabilities with Microsoft Azure, advanced layered security, more secure remote working, and modernized server infrastructure. Windows Server 2022 is a flexible platform for working in the cloud. It enables a hybrid infrastructure that helps you activate additional layers of security or take advantage of Azure capabilities.
